It is a fascinating region of the continent that has several characteristics that make it particularly special:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dubbed \u201cthe river that never finds the season\u201d, it is one of just a few major inland delta systems that does not flow into the ocean.<\/li>\n<li>Flooding takes place during the dry winter season (May to September), with animal and plant life having uniquely adapted their reproductive and other survival processes to align with this \u2018unusual\u2019 flood time.<\/li>\n<li>This pristine wetland environment provides refuge for some of the world\u2019s most endangered wildlife species, including white and black rhinoceros, African wild dogs, the slaty egret and wattled crane.<\/li>\n<li>The varied and constantly transforming habitats ensure a diversity of resident plant and wildlife species along with large herds of ungulates migrating to the flooded delta.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3118\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3118\" src=\"https:\/\/liquidgiraffe.com\/dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/LG_Okavango-Delta_Image-03_Feb-2021-e1613917593182.jpg\" alt=\"Liquid Giraffe, Okavango Delta Botswana, Africa Wetlands\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/liquidgiraffe.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/LG_Okavango-Delta_Image-03_Feb-2021-e1613917593182.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/liquidgiraffe.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/LG_Okavango-Delta_Image-03_Feb-2021-e1613917593182-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/liquidgiraffe.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/LG_Okavango-Delta_Image-03_Feb-2021-e1613917593182-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Glen Stephen \/ Liquid Giraffe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Botswana is well-known as a leader in sustainable tourism in Africa, taking a \u2018quality over quantity\u2019 approach to the safari industry in the Okavango Delta. Due to difficult access routes and vast size, the Okavango Delta is without major development and therefore upholds its ecosystem in an almost untouched condition. This change is part of the Okavango Delta\u2019s dynamic cycle and can be expected around every decade or so. As <a href=\"https:\/\/liquidgiraffe.com\/dev\/blog\/okavango-delta-floods-safari-camps-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we reported last year,<\/a> the situation changed and the Okavango received an excellent flood from the Angolan Highlands \u2013 the highest level in five years, in fact!
